Our Velar test vehicle with the V-6 was a laggard, with a posted 22 mpg in our real-world highway fuel-economy test.

The Velar's weight is likely to blame for the turbocharged four-cylinder gas engine's being just 3 mpg better (23 mpg combined) than the more powerful supercharged V-6 option.

Elsewhere, Land Rover has made more minor updates, such as making Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration across the Velar lineup and fitting the base S model with driver-assistance tech such as blind-spot monitoring, 14-way power-adjustable front seats, a power-adjustable steering column, and SiriusXM satellite radio. We've driven it already, and it's awesome. The high-performance SV Autobiography Dynamic edition joins the lineup for 2020, powered by a rip-snorting supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 making 550 horsepower. At the end of the day, rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz GLC-class, Audi Q5, and Porsche Macan may offer more substance, even if they can't match the Velar for style. Land Rover offers several trims and a plethora of option packages and customization choices to aid customers in designing a nearly bespoke SUV to suit their individual tastes. All-wheel drive is standard, as is an eight-speed automatic transmission that's shifted from a rotary knob on the center console that pops up when you start the ignition. But its unrefined powertrains, clumsy handling, and buggy infotainment system are all causes for pause. Chic styling and a desirable nameplate emblazoned above its grille makes the 2020 Range Rover Velar an attractive choice in compact-luxury SUV world.
